Linking to yourself on a client site is not SEO
One thing I have noticed is that a lot of SEO's and web designers put a link on all their clients' sites to themselves. They then turn around and try to claim to be good at SEO because they rank locally for seo or web design. That is not SEO. ...full article

How to Handle a Google Penalty
Last week, I interviewed the head of Google's spam team, Matt Cutts, about a lot of different issues. One of the most intriguing to webmasters appears to have been the discussion in the 2nd video (around 6:00) where we go into a chat about the real estate industry online, where thousands of websites have recently lost rankings due to participation in egregious manipulation through reciprocal link campaigns. ...full article

Is Google PageRank Still A Valid Marketing Tool?
The Google PageRank Toolbar in SEO circles is a hotly debated item, as are most issues dealing with Google. Some say it's useless, others say it gives you a general overview of your site's standing in Google. Regardless of who is right, this Toolbar shouldn't be ignored nor worshipped, just closely watched. ...full article

The True Cost of an In-House SEO Campaign: Why an SEO Firm Can Increase Your ROI
When a company is considering embarking upon a search engine optimization campaign, the first discussion that normally is had is whether to take care of the campaign in house or to hire an outside SEO firm. Companies making this choice need to compare the actual cost of an in-house campaign if you are expecting the same type of results that you would get with an outside SEO firm. ...full article

Google Keeps Tweaking Its Search Engine
There's an article over at The New York Times today written by a reporter that spent some time with the top algorithmic engineers (or "Google Fellows") at Google. It's a fascinating read that manages to share some great insight into the processes that go on behind the scenes of Google's popular search engine, and also into the improvements that the engineering team chase down each day. It won't tell you how to rank your site better, but it will confirm the idea that search engines are still working toward judging sites the way that humans judge sites. ...full article

SEO Basics: When to Call for Help
I've had quite a few emails this week from companies that are looking to get into the search engine marketing (specifically search optimization) game and most of them are making a common, but sometimes major mistake. They're waiting until their sites are built or their redesigns are complete before seeking out search engine optimization advice. Not good. While this is old news to most that have been around the industry for awhile, it's a business changing piece of advice for the companies that view search marketing as "just another form of marketing." ...full article
